What makes a great website?
Ease of use!
Great websites are designed to meet the goals of their visitors as quickly as possible. Decoration and aestitics are nice, but they are an afterthought. It doesn't matter how good a site looks if it does not deliver what visitors seek. The web is littered with great looking, but useless and unusable websites that lost focus on meeting visitors goals.
Real web surfers don't read, they scan
Give them a layout that works
Web surfers are always just one click away from leaving. Don't frustrate them by putting you goals ahead of theirs. Good websites remove barriers between the user and their goals.
